My studio practice involves a dualistic approach of either working from an idea or working from a material. Meditating on a particular material allows a mental space from which larger ideas can emerge, be further researched, and expanded. Other times I have a conceptual idea I want to explore and approach the project with an open mind about what material form it might take. For instance, a project about the concept of sustainability manifests itself as a product, which then becomes part of a performance. I find these oppositional approaches eventually support each other by becoming circular – the material explorations free the mind from thought and focus on the hand, and the conceptual explorations eventually need to become physical.
