The value of music, and the associated joy that went with owning something of value, was based on it's scarcity, which was based on it's physical form. If you wanted the album, you had to get up and go find it. And it wasn't always there when you did go look for it, but because you bothered to go look in the first place, you end up buying the next item on your list. Now the value is where it should be, the content of the album.
Almost the identical observations and arguments were made when music was first recorded. Before recorded music, it was even scarcer and more valuable. Your only option then was to hear it live or perform yourself. And lets not forget how horrible the recordings were supposed to be, after all you couldn't capture the clarity and the emotion of a living, breathing entity that is a performer could you? It would never be the same.
Personally, shopping in iTunes is absolutely no different for than walking into a record store, with the exception that if I'm in the mood for Johnny Cash, Keb Mo, or Justine Timberlake at 1AM, it's no big thing to wake up the Apple and purchase it. I always buy full albums, I never by singles. I never buy greatest hits albums either. It's even interesting sometimes, to find other items with tools like Genius and what other's bought. I get the same information from a conversation with a friend or that guy at the record store that has listened to every album being sold. Like any other opinion, it has potential to be good or bad.
Most of the time, especially the first few times, I listen to the album forms start to finish. It's true that some things are lost in the format, it's been proven scientifically. But things are now recorded and engineered to take these things into account and frankly, a good album is still a good album in mono on a wax cylinder. I regularly pay more or find other options than iTunes that are of better quality when I feel the item warrants it. And I'm still a regular at the Museum of Unfine art, digging in the bins. No reason not to enjoy music or any other art in all its forms.
My take on it.
Adam
PS You can have my iPhone when you pry it from my cold dead hands!!
PPS You can still find joy in "digging" to find unheard, new things, and much easier. soundcloud.com, vimeo, even youtube.

Well in this current time of erratic oil prices, environmental issues, and the perpetual headache of traffic jam, micros really go well into the groove. Even more interesting is that there has been everything from electric cars to flying micros. "From runway to driveway." We can all just hope that micros would bring about more benefits than they seem to give.
