N55 Walking House and Spaceplates

WHCOP2
Walking House

Danish art collective N55 has released a self-contained housing unit that can walk by itself using solar-powered legs. Pretty dope even if the inhabitable space looks a wee bit tight. Perhaps future iterations could include an expanding panel similar to an RV so when you stop for the night you can slide out a section to sleep in? The collective is also developing Spaceplates – printable modular building components to build a greenhouse or shelter. Lots of distributed manufacturing for simple structures going on in architecture right now, and why not? Soon we'll all have the means to produce on our own via CNC or lasercutting and using locally sourced materials will certainly cut the cost. N55 has been around for a while, before the latest surge of interest in 'design for good', and has an interest in designs produced for local economies, co-created, or based on historical forms that is really interesting. Check out the historical/cultural basis for Walking House here.
